What electricians charge: hourly rates and service calls

Published national ranges for an electrician's hourly rate and a service call, and how the two usually work together.

Updated October 4, 2026 · 3 official sources

These are published national ranges from cost guides.

What you pay for Published range
An electrician's time $50 to $130 per hour1-3
A service call $100 to $330 per visit; the lower quotes usually cover the first hour1-3

When you call about a problem, ask whether the visit fee includes the first hour, how the time after that is billed, and whether parts are extra. We don't list after-hours rates, since there aren't enough published figures to give a range. Ask what the electrician charges after hours.

What electricians earn in each state is on that state's costs page. A wage isn't a price.

The figures are published national ranges, not quotes, and local prices vary. For prices for your own job, get quotes from electricians near you.
