Permits

"Appropriate permits may be required from the local building and permitting authorities," the Department of Energy says of home charging.4 Your state's rules page on this site says whether the state requires one. Fees are set locally: Riverside, California charges $66 plus a $41 issuance fee,5 Bridgewater, Massachusetts charges $100,6 and San Diego charges $264.25 for the inspection of each charger.7

The federal credit has ended

The federal 30C credit paid 30% of a home charger's cost, up to $1,000, for chargers placed in service at a main home from January 1, 2023 to June 30, 2026, and only where the home was in an eligible low-income or non-urban census tract.8 A charger placed in service after June 30, 2026 gets no federal credit.8-9
